So yesterday at work, I was lucky enough to have one of our doctors help me in battling chronic inflammation from lupus via alternative medicine! As some of you may know, I love the thought of alternative and holistic medicine. There is definitely a time and place for both traditional western medicine and holistic medicine. Often times, heavy doses of certain pharmaceutical medications can really have negative lasting impact on the body when it is really supposed to be helping it. Because of this, when you are dealing with a chronic illness or systemic inflammation, you want a mix of both that agree with each other so that you can live the most fulfilling and energized life you can.
What is this contraption? It is a device that administers medical grade ozone gas through the blood stream intravenously. This procedure took me around 15 minutes to sit through, and it is called Major Autohemotherapy. All it takes is a trained doctor draining your blood into the vacuum sealed jar in the picture above, flipping it upside down, and injecting a syringe of medical ozone into the solution and letting it all run back into your body.
I know what you may be thinking, if you're injecting a gas/air into your blood, can't that be really detrimental? Well, this has actually been discovered as a medical treatment back in the nineteenth century (Elvis and Etka, 2011), and has been primarily used in European nations. Its unstable molecular structure (or energized oxygen) has been proven and studied for the last century to interact with many substances in the body that could potentially harm someone in the long term. It can be used to treat infection and bacteria either localized or systemically; this happens by the molecules interacting with each other and actually killing off and inactivating the bacteria, all while supporting the overall immune system. This can mean either helping in the treatment of a staph infection, or it can even help relieve you of your common cold! It has also been shown to kill cancer cells on contact, improve body pH, and increase enzyme productivity throughout your body. It is almost like a drastically less-harmful version of an antibiotic, where it can only benefit you in the end. Autoimmunity-wise, or if you have chronic inflammation from an injury, it can either be injected locally into a joint, or someone can go under major autohemotherapy as I did today for my entire system. It acts similarly in these examples, and modulates the inflammatory signals in the body to relieve the the pain caused from inflammation. I know for lupus, I take oral prescription medications that aim to modulate my immune system (Disease Modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs) but they can have many serious side effects as time goes on. I figured I would give this a shot along side of my meds with no added risk! Typically, it may take multiple treatments to feel that full effect, but it's painless and easy.
If anyone would like to find out more about how we use Ozone therapies in our office, you can find information at this link. Seriously one of the coolest and most surprising things I have learned about while working in regenerative medicine. As always, it's been a true blessing having the opportunity!
